People in custodial settings

People within custodial settings are disproportionally affected by blood-borne viruses (BBVs) and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Whilst asking additional questions to determine the level of risk, be conscious of assumptions relating to bodies and sexual activity, including injecting drug use, unsafe tattooing and sexual activity within custodial settings. Sometimes answering invasive questions is a significant barrier to initial and repeat testing in people vulnerable to sexual shame and stigma.

We recommend following the Universal principles for sexual history taking, and testing according to the Australian STI Management Guidelines for Use in Primary Care and local guidelines.
